The live performance at Saitama with participants that represent Korea like 2PM over here, have gathered over 24,000 fans. Our main event for today is the one who started this live. Why is he advancing to Japan, we are going to tackle that strategy today.
On the 11th of August at the Saitama Super Arena, Korea’s large scale entertainment company “JYP Entertainment” has opened a live performance.
Artists that have participated in this live includes the 6 member boy group 2PM.
And Wonder Girls that have made their mark as Korea’s first advancement to America by being successful at the Billboard’s single chart and other associated artists which adds up to a total of 8 groups, 23 artists in all.
They have made over 24,000 fans excited for a period of two days.
The person that have initiated this live is the company’s representative who has been active as an artist himself, J.Y.Park-san (39 years old). Park-san has debuted as an artist in the year 1992. Since then he has worked with Will Smith and many Korean stars for instance.
In Japan he has composed songs for artists such as SMAP and AI-san. He is a popular producer that has turned the whole world into his stage. After the ending of the live performance I have a chance to interview Park-san.
- Right now the Hallyu/Hanryuu (Korean Wave) is such a boom.
- What do you think is reason that this is so well-received in Japan?
- The biggest reason is
- I think that both of our cultures resemble each other in many ways.
- When a Japanese or Korean travels to America
- We resemble each other to the point that we can’t be distinguished from each other.
- It’s not just our appearance, but our languages also came from the same root.
- But we still have our differences
- And this is why we are being loved I believe.
- What are the differences?
- Normally when I look at any country’s music industry or Japan’s music industry
- I think that I can separate the singers into two groups.
- For example artists like AKB48
- They are the kind of artists that are idol-ish
- On the other hand I think that there are artists like Namie Amuro-san, Utada Hikaru-san, CHEMISTRY
- That are pursuing the musicality side instead.
- I think that perhaps, singers at our company
- aren’t able to satisfy both sides to the fullest
- but they are equipped with both the scent of an idol and a certain level of the musicality side in them.
With that the reason that made Park-san made his move into Japan…
- Korea is turning into an export-oriented country
- So if the western business faces a difficult position, Korea will also be affected.
- The population of Japan has about 120 million people
- So with this number it is suffice for Japan to do fine just within their country.
- Because of this point, I think Japan is very much blessed.
- The population of Korea has about 40 million people so no matter what we do the market in this country is too narrow to satisfy itself.
This is a record of each country’s total amount of CD sold. Within Japan there is a market for 350 billion CDs in the year 2010. For Korea there is a market for 160 million CDs. There is about a difference of 20 folds between Korea and Japan.
With that Korea is aiming for the overseas market through a thorough strategy.

When we look at 2PM there are members that are specialized in languages such as English and Japanese. In JYP Entertainment there are also people who have trained as long as 10 years before they make their debut.

- Raising up that kind of artists is the direction of our company.

What I will be saying is a little business-ish, but this is a segregation-based concept. It can also be boiled down to the whole country’s aspiration in their business. Even though this is the proportion of the country’s segregation, it all comes down to how dependent they are on this momentum. Korea’s dependency is over 50%, but on the other hand Japan’s dependency is barely 20%. Because of that, in order to stimulate their business, Korea must gradually drive and advance with this segregation. On the contrary, Japan already has a reasonable amount of market within the country already so it is true that we are not aiming for markets in Korea and overseas.
